From Bing & Ruth to David Moore
Some changes around here...
Hello friends,
This year I’m in the business of making things official, and after a long and subtle slide away from the Bing & Ruth moniker I’ll be transitioning to operating under my own name in a more significant way. It’s been fun, but to quote my recent social media post:
“...as time has gone by, the direction I’ve wanted to go musically has, more and more, pushed up against the boundaries of what that band had become to me. So, starting with the albums I made with Steve Gunn I began using my real name. It was nice. It felt more honest. I’m going to keep doing it.”
I love Bing & Ruth, of course. I love writing for that band and I love making records with that band – they are family – but I have always thought of it as more of a band, and I’d like to preserve that as I start stepping into a much wider array of projects. It’s semantics, and not really all that interesting, but part of this change is letting some things go, and welcoming some new things in. Which brings me to this message.
From now on I’ll be doing a lot more of my communicating through this email list. If there is something I want you to know, or something I think is important for you to know, I’ll mostly be saying it here first. Service-du-jour is Substack, so I’ll be sending dispatches from here for now. I cannot express to you how meaningful it is to have the ability to communicate with you directly. The future external has never felt more uncertain, so thank you for trusting me and I promise to be thoughtful with my comms. It is truly the only long-term sustainable path I can see to keeping in touch with my listeners while also minimizing our collective enrichment of open fascists. What a time.
You’ll likely start hearing from me a bit more regularly too, as the environment I’m reaching for is one where I’m able to share more of my endeavors. Just in the last six months I’ve finished a new piano album, started a new collaborative project, finished tracking for a new Cowboy Sadness album, helped craft a country record with an emo trap artist, performed a 12-tone chamber ensemble piece from a legendary noise artist, written a book, created a small series of new embroidery pieces, and started falling in love with drawing and making short films. I also, finally and after many years, have mastered my own spin on the family gumbo recipe. I would love to tell you more about all of it.
But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. For now, today, I just want to acknowledge this change – and the new service provider. I’m so grateful for all of you. I’m choosing to plant my flag again, and to do it a bit more on my own terms, so I would like to say thank you, as always, for being the wind that makes it fly.
More soon. Love y’all.
David
